Specifications

General

Timber Wood Light Standards are manufactured to the following standards. Any piece at, or within, allowable grades or tolerances is considered fully on grade. All sales are made subject to these speciffications. No appearance or performance characteristics exceeding these specifications may be warranted or implied.

Species

West coast Douglas fir only.

Grades

Exposed faces - #1 (Construction) grade. Inner plies - #2 (Standard) grade. Approximately equal laminating grades may be used at mill option.

Grades are defined in current edition of WCLIB Rules 16 and/or WWPA Grading Rules.

Moisture Content

Laminations shall be kiln dried to average MC 14.5% ± 2.5% before surfacing.

Layup

Lumber grades shall be assembled in proper sequence to produce desired strength. Laminations may be full length or finger jointed and end glued at mill option. defects which prevent adequate gluelines may not be used.

Adhesives

Fully waterproof per ANSI/AITC A 190.1 - Latest Edition.

Milling

Shall meet the requirements of WWPA para. 722.00 Standard B except that occational pieces may meet Standard C.

The aggregate of all surface defects thus allowed shall not exceed 24" multiplied by the width of the one face.

Corners shall be eased.

A raceway for wiring approximately 1" X 1" shall be milled into interior plies before gluing.

Allowable tolerances

Length - Nominal ± 1/4"
Width - Nominal ± 1/8"
Thickness - Nominal ± 1/8"
Squareness - Diagonals must be equal to within 1/8"
Straightness -

Straight Poles
Max. 1/2" to 15'6" overall length
Max. 3/4" from 15'7" to 24'6"
Max. 1" from 24'7" to 36'0"
Max. 1-1/2" from 36'1" to 47'0"

Crossarms
Max. 1/4" to 6'0" overall length
Max. 3/8" from 6'1" to 8'0"

Curved Standards (Straight leg only)
Max. 1/2" for 12C
Max. 5/8" for 15C
Max. 3/4" for 20C
Max. 1" for 25C

Twist (Rotation around long axis) - Max. .2° per lineal foot.

Radius (Curved poles only) - 9'4" ± 1".

Drilling

All standards will be drilled 30" below groundline with 1-1/4" diameter raceway access hole.

Crossarms will be drilled to receive necessary bolts. Holes will be countersunk to accept cap plugs.

Curved poles will have single raceway exit hole, 1-1/4" diameter, centered 8" from the top.

Strength

Finished standards and crossarms will meet or exceed NEMA deflection requirements under 100 mph wind loading (including 1.3 gust factor) when used with approved luminaires.

Preservative Treatment

Standards and crossarms shall be pressure treated full length after lamination according to AWPA C1 and C28, except the retention shall be determined by Assay.

Preservative will be pentachlorophenol in hydrocarbon solvent per AWPA P8 and P9. A co-solvent shall be used to increase penetration and retention.

Ground contact end of standards shall be incised to a depth of 3/4" from the butt to a point 12" above groundline before treating.

Retention in the ground contact(incised) area shall be .60# per cubic foot to a minimum depth of 3/4" as determined by Assay. (This equals or exceeds the commonly used liquid specification of 12# per cubic foot).

Solvents must be light in color, producing a "Clean" treatment, capable, after drying, of receiving stain or breather type paints. Color variations, except for repaired areas, shall be found in the natural wood, slightly darkened by treating.

Appearance before wrapping

Surfaces shall be clean and free of glue except for 12 square inches in an occasional piece.

Knots shall be sound and well spaced. Maximum size approximately 2-1/4" diameter on a 6" face or 2-3/4" on a 8" face. Knot holes approximately 5/8" diameter or larger shall be filled.

Wane or other open defect exceeding 1/4" X 12 " shall be repaired.

Checks, splits, delamination shall be repaired if they exceed 1/4" X 12 " in size but shall not be allowed if they exist in suffient size and number to render the piece structurally unsound.

Grain shelling shall be limited, but up to one square foot is permitted in an occasional piece. Skips, rough or torn grain are permitted only within the limits described under Milling.

Sticker marks shall not exceed 1-1/2" in width. Handling and steel strapping marks shall be limited to 6 square inches, 1/8" deep, on an occacional piece.

Marking and Wrapping

The ground line is marked with a brand showing month, year produced and placed on each standard before wrapping.

Standards shall be individually wrapped with reinforced water-resistant papar.

Crossarms will be wrapped in pairs (or sets), each pair sufficient for one crossarm installation.

Wrapping will be delayed at least seven days after treating to avoid "blooming" of penta salts. Packages will be marked on the outside to show the product contained and the ground line.

Crossarm hardware is to be packed in sets, each set adequate for an installation. Raceway covers are to be packed with the wood arms.

Installation instructions are to be placed inside each package at the ground line.

Shipping

Packages are to be carefully inspected at time of shipment. Torn wrapping shall be repaired. Warped or defective products shall not be shipped.

Pieces may be strapped into larger bundles using corner protectors if steel strapping is used.

Bills of lading must show the number of bundles. Hardware packages must be listed separately. Carrier is to sign bill of lading to indicate that count is accurate and packaging adequate.

All shipments are FOB shipping point-freight allowed to destination.

Post shipment performance

Manufacturers control of product ceases upon shipment. Torn wrapping damage and discoloration, or shortages are the responsibility of the carrier. Shipments should be carefully inspected immediately upon receipt, and the carrier inspection report and claim filed with the carrier if necessary.

Pending installation, lighting standards should be stored flat, well off the ground, and protected. Hardware packages should be stored inside a controlled access building.

After installation, unstained poles will weather gradually to a silver-gray color in one to three years, depending on climate.

The grain will raise and roughen. Further checking and cracking often occurs, including some checking near the glueline on occasional pieces. The end result is a weathered, semi-rustic, natural looking wood light standard, with texture and character frequently associated with barn wood or driftwood.
